Siemens Mobility – Support for Iltis, IWS and Mobility Portal

Siemens Mobility AG leverages the expertise of Puzzle Mobility and collaborates with our engineers on various projects. We had the opportunity to develop the IWS web application for the railway control system Controlguide(R) Iltis N, enabling the provision of current railway operational information beyond control centers, useful for maintenance and training purposes.

Challenge

Iltis ensures a secure, comfortable, and cost-effective railway operation both domestically and internationally. Developed by Siemens Mobility, the Iltis workplace visually represents track layouts through magnified images, providing a real-time overview of switch and signal conditions, train positions, routes, blockages, and more. These magnified images hold significant importance for various railway operations, necessitating improved accessibility.

Solutions

IWS (Iltis Webservice)

Puzzle Mobility had the privilege of making station magnifiers more accessible for wider use at Siemens Mobility. These magnifiers are now available through browser-based reading, providing a real-time display of the current railway operational status. Users can choose between “Live” and “Replay” display modes. In “Live” mode, the current situation (switch and signal conditions, train positions, routes, blockages, etc.) of the selected station is shown. In “Replay” mode, users can replay past sequences, similar to a video, by selecting start and end times. All magnified image data is recorded and stored for 30 days in “Replay” mode. Furthermore, the “Replay” can be exported as a standard video for external use beyond IWS.

IWS is successfully deployed with over 10 railway infrastructure operators in Switzerland and abroad.

Iltis

As a result of the gained expertise, Puzzle Mobility had the privilege to assist in the expansion of Iltis itself, making a significant contribution to core functions such as broker communication (ActiveMQ Messaging) and new features like movement tracking and shunting operations.

Mobility Portal

Furthermore, Puzzle Mobility provided support to Siemens Mobility in establishing the “Mobility Portal”. This portal streamlines access to various portfolio elements (different software solutions) offered by Siemens Mobility through a Single Sign-On. This simplifies access control for customers utilizing multiple solutions and enhances user accessibility. The “Mobility Portal” solution is currently in the testing phase and is planned for further expansion.

Technical Consulting

With our extensive technical expertise, we were also able to contribute to expanding the existing Keycloak authentication infrastructure (OpenID Connect) by adding single sign-on functionality. Additionally, we assisted in connecting AWS BI Reporting to various IWS clouds, thereby laying the foundation for automated data exchange.

Siemens Mobility is a division of Siemens, headquartered in Munich. Siemens Mobility encompasses four core business units: Mobility Management (rail technology and intelligent traffic systems), Railway Electrification, Rolling Stock, and Customer Services.
